What Zendaya's Spider-Man Press Tour Can Teach Us About Building a Visual Brand
If there's one celebrity whose style I could analyse for hours, it's Zendaya. Every time she steps onto a red carpet, it feels like we're watching a masterclass in visual branding. Yes, the clothes are incredible, but what makes them so memorable isn't just the fashion itself, it's the story behind it.
Over the past decade, Zendaya and her stylist, Law Roach, have built one of the strongest visual brands in Hollywood. From Dune, to Challengers, to The Odyssey, one thing we always associate with Zendaya’s brand is her creative styling. Her Spider-Man press tour has been one of my favourites because every look feels exciting, creative and completely different, yet they all still feel unmistakably Zendaya.
One thing she is notorious for is, Method Dressing, where celebrities are styled in cohesion to the project they’re promoting. Instead of simply wearing beautiful clothes, the wardrobe becomes part of the storytelling. Whether she's promoting superheroes, tennis or mythology, Zendaya fully embraces the world of the project she's working on, making every appearance feel like another chapter in the story. With many outfits hiding small clues to the films plot within the fine details of the outfit.
Within my Style Analysis system, I'd undoubtably describe Zendaya’s Visual Brand as Creative. Creatives are naturally artistic, expressive and love using fashion to tell stories. They're not interested in dressing the same every day or following strict style rules. Instead, they experiment, transform and use clothing as another creative outlet. Often focusing on small artistic, eclectic details.
That's exactly why Zendaya's event wardrobe works so well. She can wear sculptural couture one day, vintage glamour the next and elegant tailoring after that, yet it all feels cohesive because she's dressing around her personality rather than a trend.
People often ask how colour analysis fits into celebrity wardrobes because Zendaya doesn't always stay within what I'd consider her natural palette. In my analysis I have placed her within the Autumn palette, but creative personalities often prioritise storytelling over strict colour harmony. That's why I always say colour analysis and style analysis work best together. Your colours help you look your best, but your style personality is what makes people remember you.
Even off of the Red carpet Zendaya has a more subtle, eclectically creative style. While more minimalist and understated, she is very often ahead of styling trends, sourcing looks from many styles, eras and inspirations. Even her choices of hair and accessories in her daily life are creatively inspired.
Moving onto her secondary styling flare, one thing I notice throughout almost all of Zendaya's looks is a thread of romantic glamour. Even when the outfit is dramatic or androgynous, she softens it with beautiful hair, elegant accessories or timeless makeup. It's subtle, but it's incredibly consistent. She is feminine and alluring throughout.
Law Roach has said before that he doesn't think Zendaya has a signature style, but I actually disagree. I don't think her signature is a particular silhouette, designer or a trademark, I think it's the combination of creativity and romance. Using my Character Styles system, I'd describe her visual brand as The Romantic Creative.
That's what I love most about her style. She proves that having a recognisable wardrobe doesn't mean wearing the same thing over and over again. It's about understanding the story you're telling and finding endless creative ways to tell it.
